wood shavings

Alterntive material

Wood shavings or saw dust, either from a wood furniture maker or lumber yard/store, can be used to make the bokashi sprinkle.

However, here are some considerations:

  • Use only shavings and saw dust from untreated wood.
  • Certain wood types can be fermented, including walnut, teak, pine, and mahogany.
  • Avoid woods that will either not ferment or is difficult to properly ferment. Do not use maple and poplar.
  • In most cases, it would be preferable to not ferment wood materials and instead use them as either mulch, or as browns if composting, or to mix with bokashi food waste when doing the trenching/burying technique. One reason is that toxic fumes may be produced when mixing with the microbial-molasses-water mix when making the bokashi sprinkle, causing issues such as headaches. If fermenting wood shavings is part of the plan, then take the necessary precautions, including making the bokashi out in the open air or where there's proper ventilation, and /or wearing the proper mask. Fumes should not be produced after properly fermenting the wood material.
